STFC Ernest Rutherford Fellowships 2025

STFC ERF applications are subject to a comptetitive internal selection process, because departments are allocated a quota by STFC. We can support 1 STFC ERF application in 2025.

We are looking for timely and compelling research projects, either within the main research areas of the SMTG or complementing these synergistically, as well as evidence of leadership potential.

We encourage researchers with diverse career paths to apply, for example seeking to resume their research career after a career break.

Our internal deadline for Expressions of Interest is 28 July 2025 (the STFC deadline for applications is 1 October 2025, 16:00 hours UK time).

To express your interest in being nominated by our School for an ERF application to be held with the STMG as your host research group, you should submit by the deadline:

by email to Prof T Neukirch.

In addition, you are asked to voluntarily submit an equality and diversity form to [email protected] with the subject line: ‘STFC ERF Mathematics and Statistics Funding call’.. The EDI information provided will be separated from the application process itself and will not be accessible to the selection committee.

Successful applicants typically have 4-9 years of post-doctoral experience, a strong research record and can demonstrate leadership potential and/or have major research collaborations or projects. Please read the assessment criteria in the call documentation to understand whether you are likely to be competitive. If you have any doubts, please contact Prof T Neukirch or another SMTG member of staff.

Applications are particularly welcome from women, people from the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) community, and other protected characteristics who are under-represented in academic posts at the University. Equality, diversity and inclusion are at the heart of the St Andrews experience and form a central pillar of the University Strategy. We strive to create a fair and inclusive culture demonstrated through our commitment to diversity awards (Athena Swan, Carer Positive, Race Charters). We celebrate diversity by promoting profiles of BAME, LGBTIQ+ Disabled and Neurodiverse staff and supporting networks including the Staff BAME Network; Staff with Disabilities or Neurodiversity Network; Staff LGBTIQ+ Network; and the Staff Parents & Carers Network. Full details are available online from the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion webpage of the University of St Andrews.
